Interactive Brokers enables crypto portfolio transfers

Interactive Brokers Enables Direct Crypto Transfers, Unifying Digital and Traditional Assets

Interactive Brokers Group Inc. (NASDAQ: IBKR), a leading global electronic brokerage, has announced a significant enhancement to its cryptocurrency offering. Clients can now transfer their existing holdings in supported digital assets directly into their Interactive Brokers-linked crypto accounts. This development allows investors to manage their cryptocurrency portfolios alongside traditional investments like stocks, options, and futures on a single, integrated platform, all without the need to sell their digital assets first.

A Unified Platform for Modern Investors

The move addresses a key friction point for crypto investors who previously had to liquidate positions on external exchanges to move funds into a more comprehensive trading environment. By enabling direct inbound transfers, Interactive Brokers provides a streamlined path to access its competitive cryptocurrency pricing—often cited as among the lowest in the industry—while simultaneously tapping into a vast array of global markets.

“Crypto investors should be able to access competitive crypto pricing and diversified investment opportunities without managing multiple accounts or liquidating their positions,” said Milan Galik, Chief Executive Officer of Interactive Brokers. “By enabling direct crypto portfolio transfers, we’re making it easy for traders to benefit from IBKR’s low-cost crypto trading and gain access to our full range of global markets within the same professional trading environment.”

How the Transfer Process Works

Eligible clients of Interactive Brokers LLC and Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited can initiate transfers of major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), as well as others like Solana (SOL). These assets can be moved directly from external wallets or other supported platforms into the client’s IBKR-linked crypto account, which is custodied by regulated entities Paxos Trust Company or zerohash.

This process eliminates the intermediate step of selling crypto for fiat, which could trigger taxable events and exposes investors to potential market volatility during the transfer window. Instead, assets are moved on-chain, maintaining the client’s position and cost basis while simply changing the custody location to within the IBKR ecosystem.

Strategic Context and Market Position

Interactive Brokers has been steadily expanding its crypto capabilities, first launching trading for select cryptocurrencies in 2021. This transfer functionality represents a maturation of that service, aligning with the broader industry trend of institutional-grade platforms embracing digital asset integration. According to data from Statista, global crypto trading volume remains substantial, highlighting persistent demand for accessible and cost-efficient entry and exit points.

By offering a consolidated account structure, IBKR leverages its decades-long reputation for sophisticated, low-cost trading in traditional securities to attract a segment of crypto-savvy investors seeking portfolio diversification without operational complexity. The service is particularly relevant for investors looking to rebalance between asset classes or use crypto as collateral within broader margin and trading strategies available on the platform.

Important Considerations for Clients

Clients interested in utilizing this feature should verify their account eligibility and review the specific list of supported cryptocurrencies and networks, which is available within the Interactive Brokers Client Portal. Transfer times and any associated network fees will depend on the originating blockchain. Furthermore, while IBKR provides the trading interface and custody through its partners, clients must remain aware of the inherent volatility of cryptocurrency markets and the different regulatory frameworks that may apply compared to traditional securities.
