United Airlines hikes checked bag fee by $10 as fuel prices continue to climb

United Airlines Joins Industry Trend with Baggage Fee Hike Amid Soaring Fuel Costs

United Airlines has implemented a $10 increase for its first checked bag on most domestic itineraries, becoming the second major U.S. carrier to adjust baggage fees within a week as airlines grapple with a significant surge in jet fuel prices, their largest operational expense after labor.

The new fee structure, effective for tickets purchased from Friday, April 3, sets the cost at $45 for a first checked bag when paid in advance online and $50 if paid within 24 hours of departure. The increase applies to travel within the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Latin America. United Airlines last adjusted these fees in 2024, and like its competitors, is moving to offset the recent dramatic climb in fuel costs.

The Fuel Cost Catalyst

The primary driver for this and similar industry adjustments is the sharp rise in jet fuel prices. According to data from Argus, published by the industry group Airlines for America, the average price for jet fuel in key hubs like Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and New York reached $4.56 per gallon on Wednesday. This represents an increase of more than 82% since geopolitical tensions escalated following U.S. and Israeli actions in Iran on February 28. Fuel costs are notoriously volatile and directly impact airline profitability, often leading carriers to implement or increase ancillary fees like those for checked baggage to maintain margins.

A Trend Set by JetBlue

JetBlue Airways initiated this recent wave of increases just days earlier, raising its own checked bag fees by $4 to $9 depending on booking timing, as first reported by CNBC. Historically, such fee adjustments by one major carrier are often followed by others, creating a ripple effect across the competitive landscape.

Loopholes and Exceptions for Travelers

While the headline fees are increasing, numerous exceptions remain that can help travelers avoid the new charges. Airline-branded credit cards, such as the United Club℠ Card, frequently include a complimentary first checked bag as a perk for domestic coach travel. Similarly, elite status in the airline’s frequent flyer program (MileagePlus Premier for United) typically waives these fees. Passengers flying in premium cabins (like first or business class) also retain the standard free checked bag allowance. United specifically noted that its co-branded Chase credit card holders, Premier members, active military personnel, and premium cabin customers will not be affected. Additionally, all customers can still receive a $5 discount by prepaying for bags online at least 24 hours before flight time in most markets.

Broader Economic Impact of Rising Fuel Costs

The surge in fuel expenses is not isolated to the airline industry. The increased cost of logistics and transportation is filtering through the broader economy. For instance, Amazon has announced a 3.5% “fuel and logistics-related surcharge” on fees collected from third-party sellers using its fulfillment services, a move reported earlier by CNBC. This demonstrates how sustained high fuel prices can lead to increased costs for consumers across multiple sectors, from travel to e-commerce.
