Costco Wholesale beats holiday-quarter results estimates on resilient demand

Costco Beats Holiday-Quarter Estimates, Eyes Price Cuts on Potential Tariff Refunds

Costco Wholesale reported stronger-than-expected sales and profit for its critical holiday quarter on Thursday, underscoring its appeal as consumers prioritize value amid persistent economic pressure. The retail giant also signaled it would pass along any future financial windfall directly to members, following a major legal victory against U.S. emergency tariffs.

Strong Quarterly Performance Amid Economic Headwinds

For its second fiscal quarter, Costco reported net income of $2.04 billion, a nearly 14% increase from the prior year. A key metric, same-store sales excluding fuel, rose 6.7%, surpassing analyst forecasts of a 5.88% increase compiled by LSEG. This performance highlights the warehouse club’s resilience as inflation continues to strain household budgets, particularly in high-cost categories like rent and gasoline.

“The stock had high expectations heading into the print given its above-average valuation, but the market will likely continue to view the stock as a safe haven due to geopolitical volatility,” said David Wagner, head of equity and portfolio manager at Aptus Capital Advisors. The company’s shares were largely unchanged in extended trading, reflecting a market that may have already priced in the solid results.

Tariff Victory Paves Way for Potential Price Reductions

The earnings report was accompanied by significant legal and strategic news. Costco was among over 1,000 businesses that successfully challenged President Donald Trump’s use of the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose sweeping import tariffs. The U.S. Supreme Court struck down those emergency duties.

During a post-earnings call, CEO Ron Vachris stated that while the timing and amount of potential tariff refunds are still uncertain, Costco intends to return any recovered funds to consumers through lower prices. “Costco would look to lower prices and provide better value to customers if it receives any refunds,” Vachris said, per the Reuters report. This follows recent price reductions on items like textiles, bedding, and cookware after tariffs on certain countries, including China, were rolled back.

Value-Driven Strategy Attracts Broader Customer Base

The tariff environment adds another layer to the macroeconomic challenges facing consumer retailers. However, Costco’s membership-based model and focus on value have proven effective. The company raised its annual membership fee in 2024, a move that has not deterred traffic, as shoppers across income levels are drawn to its bulk deals and private-label offerings.

A core part of this strategy is investment in the Kirkland Signature brand, which provides a lower-cost alternative to national brands and reinforces Costco’s reputation for quality and value. This dual approach of membership loyalty and in-house brands is particularly resonant as Americans seek to stretch their dollars, positioning Costco competitively against other big-box retailers like Walmart.

Looking Ahead: Navigating a Volatile Trade Landscape

While the Supreme Court decision removed a specific tariff threat, the broader trade backdrop remains fluid. The temporary levies previously enforced contributed to cost pressures that companies are still managing. Costco’s ability to rapidly adjust pricing on select merchandise demonstrates an operational agility that supports its value proposition.

For investors and consumers alike, Costco’s quarter illustrates a business model that can navigate political and economic crosscurrents. The combination of robust same-store sales growth, a clear plan for tariff refunds, and a deepening value-oriented product mix reinforces its standing as a trusted retailer during uncertain times.
