Basic business class is here with new, stripped-down United Polaris fares

United Airlines Introduces Tiered Pricing for Polaris Business Class

For decades, airlines have meticulously segmented the economy cabin with a ladder of fare classes, from restrictive basic economy to premium extra-legroom seats. Now, that granular approach is moving to the front of the plane. United Airlines is launching a new, multi-tiered pricing structure for its long-haul Polaris business class, introducing a “Base” fare that offers the core lie-flat seat experience but with notable restrictions.

What’s Included in the New “Base” Polaris Fare?

Starting this spring, travelers will be able to purchase a Base Polaris ticket, which guarantees a spot in United’s international business class cabin featuring its lie-flat seats. However, this entry-level option comes with key limitations. Passengers will not be able to select their specific seat in advance without an additional fee, and their checked baggage allowance is reduced to one bag instead of the standard two. Lounge access is also tiered: Base Polaris customers gain entry to a United Club airport lounge but are excluded from the more luxurious Polaris lounges, which offer premium amenities like showers and à la carte dining. Notably, these tickets are non-changeable and non-refundable.

Despite these restrictions, United confirms that Base Polaris passengers will receive the same full meal service—including the airline’s signature ice cream sundae—as travelers in the higher fare classes within the same cabin. The airline has not disclosed specific price differentials but states the Base fare is designed as an “entry-level point” for the premium cabin.

The Bigger Picture: An Industry-Wide Trend Toward Cabin Segmentation

United’s move is part of a broader industry strategy to extract maximum revenue from premium cabins, which generate a disproportionate share of airline profits. The carrier is simultaneously rolling out similar segmentation for its Premium Plus long-haul economy class. The new Polaris tiers—Base, Standard, and the top-tier “Flexible” option that includes access to the new, suite-like Polaris Studio—will debut in select markets this spring before expanding to more international and long-haul domestic routes later in the year.

This fine-tuning of the front cabin follows a major cabin overhaul. United is retrofitting its Boeing 787 Dreamliners and other long-haul aircraft with new Polaris suites featuring sliding doors and larger in-flight entertainment screens. The decision to segment the cabin further acknowledges that not all business class travelers have identical needs or budgets. Some prioritize a guaranteed lie-flat bed and premium dining at the lowest possible cost, while others value flexibility, specific seat choices, and lounge amenities enough to pay more.

Rival Airlines Are Watching Closely

United is not alone in this strategy. Delta Air Lines has publicly stated it is also considering segmenting its front-of-plane cabins. As airlines continue to invest billions in larger, more private premium seats—sometimes at the expense of economy seat density—creating multiple price points within a single cabin allows them to cater to a wider spectrum of high-value customers, from budget-conscious luxury seekers to the most flexible and affluent travelers.

For consumers, the change means a new layer of complexity when booking. The lie-flat seat is no longer a monolithic product; its price and perks now depend on the specific fare bucket. The central question United is betting on is this: for a traveler focused on the core benefit of a flat bed and a glass of Champagne, does the exact seat location or lounge access truly matter? The airline is wagering that for a growing segment, the answer is no—as long as the price is right.
